Based on data from BirdCast, an estimated 75 million birds traveled through Baltimore County during the 2023 fall migration. The Chesapeake Bay is a key part of the Atlantic Flyway, which stretches from the Arctic to South America and runs along the entire U.S. East Coast. As our conference attendees convene in the Inner Harbor of Baltimore, we won’t be the only ones travelling through.

During fall migration, most birds will pass through the Chesapeake region from early September through October, bringing exciting birding opportunities for conference attendees. As we meet in Birdland (a nod to the iconic Camden Yards, home of MLB’s Baltimore Orioles), let’s reflect on both the amazing scale of these seasonal migrations and the unprecedented challenges we now face as wildlife professionals. Join us on 10/19 from 7pm – 9pm as we screen the film, Flyways, from Nature on PBS. The film is just under 1 hour long, so there’ll be plenty of time to chat with fellow attendees (or try your hand at Wingspan) as we officially kick off the 31st Annual TWS Conference. In classic movie night fashion, popcorn will be served.

What’s Wingspan you ask? It’s an award winning board game in which players compete to attract birds to their wildlife reserves. Wingspan has become a favorite amongst TWS staff and in keeping with the Birdland and family theme, our team wanted to share it with all of you. Thanks to our friends at Stonemaier Games, we’ll have several Wingspan and Wingspan Asia games for attendees to play. Even better, everyone who plays the game during the conference will be entered into a drawing for the chance to take one of the games home. Learn the rules here.
